Scope

The Controller has direct responsibility for the monetary affairs of the organization. This includes organization-wide budgeting, financial planning, control, accounting, financial reporting and treasury related functions.

Essential Functions

  • Develop, supervise, lead and motivate Corporate Accounting Manager(s) including:
    • Recommend staff promotions
    • Prepare and deliver performance reviews
    • Resolve staffing issues/problems
    • Evaluate and approve staffing decisions recommended by manager(s).
  • Perform controllership and expense management activities.
  • Evaluate new business proposals, financial implications and make recommendations to Senior Management.
  • Prepare weekly/monthly cash flow reports for Senior Management and manage the cash flow. Determine internal financial needs and present to Senior Management.
  • Negotiate bank loans.
  • Negotiate fees with departmental suppliers (i.e. custodian, auditors).
  • Ensure that accounting activities are in accordance with established legal, regulatory and company policies and procedures by establishing and monitoring internal controls.
  • Work with Corporate Accounting Manager to oversee the year-end audit, preparation of audited financial statements, and government audits.
  • Provide guidance to the department on tax matters, including tax filing positions.
  • Analyze financial activities to identify trends, opportunities and problems, and report such finding to Senior Management.
  • Review and approve various financial reports (i.e. internal and external financial statements, cashflow projections, distribution calculations, covenant calculations).
  • Keep abreast of changes/trends within the industry.
  • Oversee the budget and forecasting processes including:
  • Assist departments in developing their budgets
  • Present the budgets to senior management
  • Monitor actual results to budget on an ongoing basis.
  • Take control of the implementation of new systems and processes to improve department efficiency and quality of work.
  • Provide advice and guidance on all accounting matters including financial systems, record keeping, analysis, and reporting.

Designation:

  • CPA designation required

Work Experience:

  • Excellent communication and organizational skills with a strong attention to detail.
  • Thorough knowledge of all relevant Federal, Provincial and local requirements regarding financial records, tax filing and reporting is preferred.
  • Extensive experience and knowledge of all aspects of corporate accounting and financial management is preferred.
  • Management and or supervisory experience.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word and Dynamics is preferred.
